What went wrong with news summaries? #
In December 2024 the BBC complained to Apple after a notification summary of its news alerts falsely suggested that Luigi Mangione, the suspect in a high-profile shooting, had shot himself. Other outlets reported similar errors, with summaries merging separate headlines into statements no one had published.
Apple responded that the features were in beta and then, in iOS 18.3, turned off summaries for apps in the News & Entertainment category while it worked on accuracy. It also italicized summaries and added a warning that they may contain errors. News summaries later returned with clearer “summarized by Apple Intelligence” labeling.
The underlying problem isn’t unique to Apple. Small on-device models are asked to compress several short, context-poor messages into one line. That’s exactly the setting where a model can blend two headlines, miss sarcasm, or state a guess as fact.
When should you trust a summary? #

How do you turn off notification summaries on iPhone? #
- Open Settings > Notifications.
- Tap Summarize Notifications.
- Turn it off completely, or leave it on and switch off individual apps, such as news apps or a family chat.
A few related controls are worth knowing:
- Scheduled Summary is a separate, older feature that batches non-urgent notifications at set times. It doesn’t use AI to rewrite anything.
- Reduce Interruptions, a Focus mode that uses Apple Intelligence to let through only notifications it judges important, can be set up under Settings > Focus.
- Per-app notification settings still apply, so you can mute an app entirely whatever the AI does.

How do you summarize long messages privately yourself? #
Notification summaries only see the notification text. For a long email thread, a sprawling group chat you’ve exported, or a document someone sent, you often want a proper summary with the details intact.
You can do that with a model on your phone.
